Mormons consider themselves to be Christians. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus, the Christ. Mormons call themselves the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There has long been a tendency toward either-or logic in Christianity. Historically, Mormons had avoided this connotation by being unusually tolerant and progressive.
Carolyn is a cultural Mormon. Her religious heritage goes back three generations on her father's side, and back five generations, to pre-civil war North Carolina, on her mother's side. She remembers the time when the concept of "Free Agency" was widely practiced, when Mormon leaders discussed philosophical ideas with each other in public, when sometimes leaders did not get automatically sustained in their callings, and when there was a high level of tolerance. The church actively encouraged many generations of intellectuals, free thinkers, social activists, and even feminists. Both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young encouraged women to become educated and articulate. it can be noted that Utah was the first state to allow women to vote!

Buddhism and Christianity are related religions, tracing their roots to the old Brahmic religion before the time of Abraham. Scholars have long noted that many of Jesus' teachings are similar to many Buddhist scriptures. Unlike Christianity, however, Buddhism is characterized by neither-nor logic, which is used to confront preconceived notions.
