Carolyn and Dennis met early in 1979. They met on the KVI radio program called the Loveline. Various Seattle radio stations have hosted the Loveline over the years. The format is simple: when a person tells something about themselves on the program, the first five interested people of the opposite sex call to reserve a chance to meet them. In all cases, as a form of protection, the women get the phone numbers and do the initial calling.
Dennis and Carolyn were married in June 1980. This was Dennis' only marriage and Carolyn's third marriage. This was Dennis' introduction at step-parenting, which took him at least twelve years to get the hang of.
About Carolyn:
Carolyn was born in Preston Idaho. Before moving to Washington State, she lived in Idaho and Utah where she attended elementary and junior high school. She went to high school in Washington and graduated from Renton High School. Shortly after graduation from high school, Carolyn married Dean Bushman and within a few months both of them went to Brigham Young University where they both graduated with teaching credentials. Upon their graduation they got teaching jobs in Renton, Washington, in the same school district where she and her brother had finished their public school education and also the same district her father had spent seventeen of his thirty-three years teaching in public school. After teaching full time for three years, Carolyn and Dean adopted a boy they named Mark and then two years later a girl, Stephanie Jane. Carolyn stayed home as a full-time mother for the next nine years until her marriage to Dean ended. At that time she returned to teaching to help support herself and her children, although Dean did continue to help in the children's support until they were eighteen. Through the years, Carolyn has taught grades Kindergarten through fourth grades as well as some teaching in preschool and parent education through the local community college system in western Washington. Recently, she completed a masters program at City University. She learned all about Howard Gardner's Seven Modes of Intelligence for her graduate project. Presently, she is retired from the third grade at Cascade Elementary in the Renton School District. Third grade has become her favorite grade to teach and if she had to change grades at this point in her career, she would go up rather than down in grade levels, partly because of the excitement she has witnessed her older students have to the more sophisticated academic curriculum as well as their ability to more effectively explore the new technologies that have become available. Her school was recently rebuilt and has a state of the art computer lab as well as computers in all of the classrooms. This makes her teaching more exciting than ever before. Her favorite soap opera is All My Children. She especially likes PBS television, where she watches The News Hour, Nova, Frontline, Washington Week in Review, To The Contrary, and many documentaries, especially science based ones. She likes programs like Star Trek and Red Dwarf. She has been to many Seattle-area Science Fiction conventions. She likes to read science fiction especially things written by Anne McCaffrey and Orson Scott Card. She also enjoys reading many diverse topics both fiction and nonfiction from such authors as Anne Tyler, James Herriot, Erma Bombeck and recently has begun reading from Oprah Winfrey's Book Club List. Her very most favorite pastime lately, is playing with her year old grandbaby, Braden. She is an activist veteran of many PFLAG conventions and Sunstone Symposiums. Her Meyers-Briggs personality type is 'INFJ' (see The Counselor Style or INFJ Profile ). Carolyn is a Mormon.
